Introduction |
The death of Soviet leader, Josef Stalin, in 1953 saw a fierce power struggle that culminated in Nikita S. Khrushchev (Khrushchev) assuming sole leadership of the Soviet Union.
Khrushchev denounced Stalin's practice of using terror to remain in power and eased authoritarian control over his party associates and over the society. However, Khrushchev's reforms in agriculture and administration failed to reap the expected results and even his foreign policy toward China and the US backfired.
